AUSTRAC Urges Inactive Digital Currency Exchange Firms to Take Action or Risk Registration Cancellation
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has recently launched a new campaign targeting inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms, urging them to either resume trading or withdraw their registrations promptly. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of their registrations, according to AUSTRAC’s official announcement.
Identification of Inactive DCEs
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, with various digital currency exchange services. However, not all of these registered firms are actively trading. AUSTRAC has expressed concerns about the number of inactive businesses operating in this high-risk sector, as their dormant status could potentially make them attractive targets for criminal activities.
Brendan Thomas, AUSTRAC’s CEO, emphasized the importance of keeping registration details up to date, even for services that are no longer operational. The aim of the recent campaign is to safeguard the DCE sector from being exploited by illicit actors seeking to misuse digital currency exchange services for illegal purposes.
Preventing Criminal Exploitation
Thomas highlighted the risks associated with cryptocurrency, such as money laundering, scams, and money mule activities, emphasizing the need to prevent criminals from taking advantage of digital currency platforms for unlawful activities. By canceling registrations of inactive DCE firms, AUSTRAC aims to mitigate vulnerabilities in the system and make it more challenging for criminals to abuse exchange services.
The campaign not only aims to enhance the integrity and accuracy of AUSTRAC’s register but also to protect consumers from falling victim to fraudulent schemes involving digital currency. Inactive firms are encouraged to proactively reach out to AUSTRAC to cancel their registrations, with the option to reapply in the future if circumstances change.
Establishing a Publicly Searchable DCE Register
In addition to addressing inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC plans to establish a publicly accessible register for citizens to verify the legitimacy of cryptocurrency providers. This initiative aims to boost consumer confidence in identifying registered and regulated digital currency exchange services and drive criminal elements out of the industry.
