UK Gambling Commission Embraces Office for Statistics Regulation’s Findings on Gambling Survey for Great Britain
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has expressed its appreciation for the insights provided by the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) regarding the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). In response, the regulator has committed to implementing new initiatives based on the OSR’s recommendations.
OSR Reviews the GSGB
The OSR was entrusted with the task of conducting a thorough evaluation of the GSGB. The office commended the survey’s transparency and recognized the meticulous effort that went into its creation. Moreover, the OSR offered recommendations to further enhance the survey’s credibility.
The GSGB, which is built on the UKGC’s official statistics on gambling behaviors in the country, represents the culmination of the regulator’s endeavors to ensure transparency within the industry. After years of development, the UKGC sought the OSR’s assessment of the GSGB against its standards outlined in the Code of Practice for Statistics.
While the OSR noted the absence of an accredited official statistics status, it affirmed that this does not diminish the quality or reliability of the GSGB, despite certain assertions to the contrary. Additionally, the OSR acknowledged the UKGC’s commitment to transparency regarding the strengths and limitations of its methodology and statistical approach.
UKGC’s Response to Recommendations
According to the OSR, effective communication and user engagement are essential for the ongoing success of the GSGB. In light of this, the UKGC is contemplating the establishment of a new GSGB Statistics User Group comprising various industry stakeholders. This group will serve as a platform for dialogue, feedback, and shared learning.
In line with the OSR’s recommendations, the UKGC has already implemented or is considering several improvements, including:
- Updating the survey improvement plan with additional information for users
- Introducing new survey questions designed to validate GSGB findings against external data sources
- Enhancing the accessibility and usability of GSGB outputs
Furthermore, the UKGC is planning the following enhancements:
- Comparing data with upcoming datasets from the Health Survey for England and the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey
- Developing a communications strategy to enhance the dissemination of GSGB updates
- Continuing to improve the accessibility and usability of GSGB outputs based on feedback from the GSGB stats user group
The UKGC emphasized that it is also working on improvements in accordance with recommendations from Professor Sturgis’s independent review.

Ben Haden, the director of research and statistics at the UKGC, expressed satisfaction with the OSR’s review findings, stating:
We are pleased they [the OSR] recognize the huge amount of work that the team has put into developing and delivering the largest survey of its kind in the world. We also welcome OSR’s recommendations for further action, which closely align with work that we already have underway.
Meanwhile, the second GSGB annual report is scheduled to be released on October 2, 2025.
